Industry professionals discussed development of photonics in Moscow

30 / 03 / 2023

The Panel on Photonics in Moscow was held as part of the Photonics 2023 conference programme. It was organised by the Moscow City Department of Investment and Industrial Policy, the Laser Association, and EXPOCENTRE AO.

Emil Petrosyan, Deputy Head at the Moscow City Department of Investment and Industrial Policy, spoke in detail about the inter-industry photonics cluster that was created last October on the platform of the Moscow Innovation Cluster. Approximately half of the microelectronics companies that are residents of Technopolis Moscow became its members.

The Moscow Photonics Cluster will be the centre of the capital's ecosystem for the design, production and implementation of photonic integrated circuits as the basis for most next-generation photonic devices. It will include design centres, factories, test laboratories and enterprises and will bring together Moscow’s enterprises and scientific and technical organisations.

Photonic technologies can increase the speed of data processing and transmission by 50-100-fold. They are used, for example, in mobile phones, computers and light-emitting diodes, i.e. wherever the flow of photons (light) is used like electrons in electronics. The parts of such devices are tens of times smaller than today's microchips, and they save considerably more energy.

The panel’s participants included Alexey Perevalov, Director at Rostelecom's Technology Partnership Management Centre, Magomed Alikhanov, CEO at Neoros, and other industry experts.

The meeting reviewed in detail the needs of the Russian market for innovative photonics products. In addition, special attention was paid to the project on creation of pilot production of photonic integrated circuits (PIC) by the Moscow Photonics Centre under the auspices of the Technopolis Moscow special economic zone.

On the same day, the stand of the Zelenograd Development Corporation hosted an agreement signing ceremony between two leaders of the Russian photonics industry – Quartz Crystals Technology AO and Lassard OOO. The agreement provides for the supply of quartz glass tooling for the production of equipment based on laser systems, among other things.
