Photonics achievements have enriched mankind’s technology. Laser optical technologies are vastly applied in various fields of human activity, opening up new vistas. Laser equipment plays a huge role in modern medicine facilitating near-patient testing, new endoscopic methods, and high-precision surgery, as well as new treatment methods such as photodynamic therapy. Russian scholars have made a great contribution to the development of almost all branches of laser medicine, and it is a pleasure to know that many models of Russian medical laser equipment enjoy high reputation among specialists. I very much hope that the Photonica exhibition will attract attention of doctors and health care officials and will help to fit out Russian clinics with highly-efficient laser equipment.
Photonics is a highly innovative industry, and the exhibition will certainly put on display a broad variety of new developments. It is very unfortunate that the real support to the innovative activity in our country is far below the promised level. But I am convinced that there is no alternative to innovative development, and very soon we will have the legislation on innovative activity, as well as a clear-cut government policy on innovations, and successful innovative projects, programmes and organizations. The displays of the Photonica exhibition testify to Russia’s great potential for innovation, and we must thank the Laser Association and Expocentre for organizing such an event.
