A laser beam to replace a computer mouse

You like your computer mouse, but still looking for something new? What if you lay the mouse aside and feel free with … its absence? That is just what Pranav Mistri from Fluid Interfaces Group of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) thinks.

The core of Pranav Mistri’s invention is a web camera and a laser beam operating together. The laser projects the beam to the worktop, and the camera traces the beam and detects movements of the hand and fingers as if the palm was laid on a regular computer mouse and the fingers clicked the buttons.
