Laser industry experts discuss proposals for supporting promising photonics projects

29 / 03 / 2022

An open joint meeting of the Council of the Laser Association, the Secretariat of the Russian Technology Platform on Innovative Laser, Optical and Optoelectronic Technologies – Photonics, and the Board of Founders of the Eurasian Photonics Technology Platform took place within Photonics. World of Lasers and Optics 2022 at EXPOCENTRE Fairgrounds today.

Representatives of the professional community held a discussion on the effectiveness of using the available tools by the Laser Association members to support innovative industry projects and organisations. The event was moderated by President at the Laser Association Ivan Kovsh. Representatives of photonics companies, research organisations and centres put forward constructive suggestions and proposals.

According to Mr. Kovsh, the strategic programme of the technical platform is constantly being updated. The problem lies in scientific cooperation. Many training centres work with foreign partners. Due to the current situation, limiting contacts will slow down the development of scientific research, so we will have to cope with our own efforts.

Speaking about the landscape of the industry, the president of the Laser Association pointed to the funding from the authorities. In his opinion, there is no point in planning the development without baseline data, as "first of all, it is necessary to find partners for a good project and set up work, and secondly, to implement it with the help of the existing development institutions. We need to be more proactive and fight for projects."

Ivan Kovsh reminded that Russian country needed an overseeing body to coordinate work on photonics. It could recommend some lines of action and rely on clear, correct information on the state of affairs. Above all, there should be a certain group of experts who professionally deal with these issues and actively work with the tech platforms.

In conclusion, the Association President said that the association was ready to help and support all projects. The regional centres should be more active. "This is an important channel for us to understand what the regions need. Communication with people working in the regions in all kinds of places – companies, clinics, universities – can only be done through regional centres. We are counting on them to be active,” said Mr. Kovsh.

Today’s conferences of the 10th Congress of the Photonics Russian Technology Platform were devoted to Laser Production Technologies, Semiconductor Photonics and Nanophotonics, and Optical Materials and Components of Photonics. Two other events of the day were the Strategic Session of the Competence Center of the National Technologic Initiative in Photonics, and the Conference of the Laser Association devoted to the elections to the Collegium of CIS national experts on lasers and laser technologies.
